Dodger BP has given up 10 runs in 2 games. These guys aren't lights out pitchers so it behooves the manager to be judicious when contemplating the urge to pull a starter or RP when unnecessary, which then is followed by a parade of the entire BP. Besides, Roberts is bad at this strategy.

MLBTR via Bill Plunkett reporting that Kershaw may not be too far from returning to the roster. He has a live BP session today, and if all goes well may be going out on several rehab starts to build innings.

Hopefully the bullpen will get their collective shit together soon.
I disliked the Joke Kelly signing from the outset. He's been a pretty mediocre pitcher his entire career. He had three months last year with ERA's above 8 and was totally untrustworthy out of the pen except during hot spurts. We happened to catch him on a hot run during the World Series, aided by our launch angle approach on his high fastball, which we continued to chase.

It didn't take long for him to show you can't trust him, even with a four run lead.

AF has a lot of misses when it comes to FA pitchers. It's also strange w/Kelly's track record that they automatically anointed him the setup role. Strawberry Fields didn't perform this badly. He did tend to give up the gopher ball but not multiple runs.

I didn't see most of the game, but from reading the post game write ups, IMO this sounds (at least from the pitching end) on Roberts.

It sounded like Kelly was rushed into the game, ie not given the proper time to warm up, and ended up getting on the side of a Sllder to Walker (a former Dodgers draft pick) and hanging it.

Heck, he even blindsided his SP by pulling him after 5.1 innings ... No communication.

Offensively, they had ample opportunity to score more than 4 runs.

I didn't watch the game either. I just checked the stats and noticed the same thing that Bluefan mentioned... was there a particular reason why Stripling was yanked after 5.1? He had just retired 6 in a row (3 strikeouts and 3 groundouts), so why did Roberts pull him after 76 pitches?

I thought the purpose of spring training was to make sure your pitchers were back in shape and capable of throwing more than 76 pitches at a time.

I honestly don't think I want to watch another year or three of Dave Roberts trying to manage a pitching staff. The guy obviously can't learn from past idiocy.

No reason other than the pregame script had a pitch count limit on Strip. I guess I was fooling myself that Roberts would change his pattern of ridiculous pitcher management this year. Hell, a DBack RP threw 60 last night. Let Strip finish the 6th unless he gets into trouble, then you don't burn Alexander. Let Baez start & finish the 7th. Don't panic w/2 outs 2 on, Then go to Kelly in the 8th to start a clean inning hopefully still up by 3 runs. I say it over & over about the dominoes falling when Roberts pulls a starter too soon unnecessarily. It not only affects the outcome almost every time but results in exhausting the entire bench & most of the BP before 9 innings & before the other team. If the game goes extra the Dodgers are screwed. Yes, the offense had so many chances to score but didn't which is why it's important to manage the pitching staff better than Roberts does.

Yes, I do put this loss on Roberts w/his pitcher management. The look on Strip's face when Dave came out to the mound was one of "why". I had Rich Hill flashbacks in the 2nd game of the year.

Roberts said Strip threw in the mid sixties pitches in his last spring outing so 76 was enough of an extension yesterday. Of course no writer followed up with a question as to why he hadn't been extended more in the spring and isn't that why they schedule such a long spring training in the first place? Roberts also said the pen was fresh but he certainly took care of that "problem", didn't he?
