The surging Giants are now only two games out of the wild card with 64 to play. Hard to imagine they will be sellers. That would mean there is even less good relief help available.
The next ten days will tell the story. Realistically, unless this current stretch is indicative of things to come, the Gnats' chances don't look great. There are some pretty decent teams they have to compete against for the wild card (Washington, Philadelphia, Arizona, St. Louis, and Milwaukee). They would have to out pace four of those teams for a one-game elimination game against whoever tops out among that group. For that long shot opportunity, they'd lose out on some solid compensation for Bumgarner and WSmith. They also don't have the fallback of deals after the deadline, as in years past.

I don't know. Of those teams ahead of them, only the Nats & Brewers are tough while the others are nothing special. Giants already beat the crap out of MIL so who knows. We'll see how much power Bochy has because you know he's not willing to give up his valuable pen arms & toss in the towel on his last rodeo.

I'd bet Zahidi wishes they'd stop winning so he could take advantage of the market. As it stands now I don't think they will.

One reason for promoting Ruiz might be to make sure Smith isn’t pushed too hard.

His Games Played and Innings at Catcher per year are …

2016 – 39 GP / 332.2 INN
2017 – 56 GP / 474.0 INN
2018 – 49 GP / 402.1 INN
2019 – 57 GP / 468.0 INN *

With Ruiz up, they can also give Smith more reps defensively at 2B and/or 3B to give him more opportunities for AB’s when he is recalled again in September.

* Includes time in Majors

Could be showcasing Ruiz as well for a trade.
Yep, nothing like the PCL to quickly inflate some offensive numbers. Also, from a fan base viewpoint, it will look better to be getting a AAA catcher and top prospect than a AA player. Just a perspective thing.

I have to think Ruiz is the centerpiece of a trade in the next 10 days. Assuredly for a reliever.

Nice job taking care of business this weekend against a shitty team.
Yeah, hard to really learn much out of a series like this since Miami is essentially a minor league team. It starts a positive streak though.

They had to sweep to erase some of the stench from the last series.
