Up later than usual, tonight. Found a funny little manga titled My Girlfriend with the Blue Striped Panties and got hooked big time. The aforementioned panties only appear in the first two pages. A girl transfers into a new high school and through a comedy of errors, she is embarrassed in front of a boy by the wind blowing up her skirt and vows to hate the boy because he saw her drawers. The funny part is that the boy is smitten not by the girl's drawers but by her waiflike appearance. See, she is less than five feet tall and small boned, but adorable. Come to find out that the girl is transferring to her new school because her loser father owes millions of yen to the boy's grandfather and to pay off the debt, she has promised to work as a live-in landlady at the apartment complex owed by the grandfather. While that sounds a bit unbelievable, it comes to be that the girl is the godchild of the grandfather and he would like her to marry his grandson. But, the father does owe the grandfather the money and the girl is unaware of the godchild aspect until chapter forty. The forty chapters I binged through are a combination of comedic misfortune and some tear-jerking moments like when the boy tries to tell her he loves her and she refuses to meet him halfway because of the grandfather thing and tells him she hates him. By chapter 36, she admits to her best friend that she loves the guy but her hatred for his grandfather doesn't allow her to tell him that. I am about ten chapters behind the raws, so I should be able to catch up in short order tomorrow.
I also have an update on my soaper, Kanojo No Domestic. Looks like they are going for the full on soap opera treatment. Hina is still in a coma, Natsuo is not eating and Rui is worried sick about both. Natsuo's gay Yakuza bartender lets slip that Hina confided in him about the tabloid author and refused his assistance in the issue. He is a fixer in his spare time and would've taken care of the author in his way and he feels responsible because she asked for his advice but told him to let her handle it. In the meantime, while Natsuo is taking a break, a nurse hands Rui Hina's belongings and she finds a necklace with two rings with the initials H and N on each ring and a heart connecting them. Rui is a smart girl and figures out that Hina still loved Natsuo and thereby tells Natsuo the wedding is off, while crying her eyes out. I am waiting for the new raws to come out because this chapter never appeared in the earlier raws and the last raws I read were a wedding scene and then Hina playing with her niece on her lap while Rui and Natsuo look on. Either the author is changing tack or she is appealing to the readership who wanted Natsuo and Hina to marry. Figure that Rui and Natsuo getting married is still the eventual ending but it would not be the first time a mangaka has changed an ending because of an angry readership. We Never Learn proved that. The student was supposed to marry his teacher in the original raws but the age difference didn't play well.
